Park & Recreation Supervisor

Function

The Park & Recreation Supervisor's primary responsibility is to oversee the execution of the day-to-day operations of Centennial Park on behalf of the Midland Downtown Park Conservancy (MDPC). Work includes planning, organizing, scheduling, coordinating, assigning, training, and evaluating the work of subordinate parks operations employees, temporary employees, and contract workers.

Reports to: Executive Director

Position Duties

    • Directly manage sanitation, security, horticulture, and maintenance staff and contract workers to ensure Centennial Park is clean, safe, and well-manicured, with systems (including electrical, mechanical, and plumbing) in good working order at all times while open to the public.
    • Manage department schedules of all workers in the park.
    • Supervise assigned staff, including training, performance evaluations, organizing work, effectively recommending discipline, and representing management in adjusting grievances.
    • Develop and implement short, medium, and long-term work plans for various operational tasks and projects, including building and grounds maintenance, equipment maintenance, land management, horticultural needs, and inventory.
    • Maintain and troubleshoot videoboard, music streaming service, security cameras, splash pad, lighting, etc.
    • Maintain Park grounds by removing litter, emptying trash containers, and ensuring the park is clean.
    • Perform daily inspections of the park to ensure all areas remain clean, safe, and maintained.
    • Operate power equipment such as air compressor, leaf blower, and power-washer.
    • Present budget recommendations to the Executive Director and other committees as necessary.
    • Interpret federal, state, and local laws, policies, rules, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to the safe/effective use of tools, equipment, chemicals, and fertilizers.
    • Receive and respond to inquiries, requests, and complaints from the public regarding the park facility and operations.
    • Prepare correspondence and reports relating to park operations.
    • Attend meetings and make presentations related to park operations as directed.
    • Identify, negotiate with, and manage specialized contractors and vendors for any needed maintenance work.
    • Work with the events and programming staff to provide support for events and activities.
    • Provide other assistance to the Executive Director as requested.
    • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure efficient operation of the park.

Qualifications/Skills/Abilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is preferred, along with experience in business operations or property/grounds management, preferably in a managerial position.
  • Certified Pool Operator, preferred.
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector, preferred.
  • Ability to represent the park with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to park policies, and support management decisions positively and professionally.
  • Ability to maintain the park grounds and facilities at the highest level of quality and safety possible
  • Advanced computer and office skills required, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel.
  • Ability to work outdoors during all seasons, in varying weather conditions, and a public setting.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings as needed for events and activities.
  • Strong documentation skills and close attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Superior communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to take the initiative and complete project assignments independently and on time.
  • Ability to represent the park with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to park policies, and support management decisions positively and professionally.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage time well.
  • Ability to lead others effectively and work without supervision in a small office environment.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of discretion and confidentiality.

Midland Downtown Park Conservancy is a Texas non-profit corporation formed to manage, operate, and program Centennial Park. Centennial Park opened in the fall of 2020. The park serves as a premier green space and gathering place in downtown Midland.

The Park & Recreation Supervisor position offers a competitive benefits package and a salary commensurate with experience between $45,000 - $50,000. Midland Downtown Park Conservancy offers a team-oriented atmosphere and the opportunity to provide exciting services to the community.

Park & Recreation Coordinator

Function

The Park & Recreation Coordinator position is tasked with maintaining park grounds and facilities at the highest level of quality and safety possible and assist with programming and events services.

Reports to: Operations Manager Type: Full Time, non-exempt

Position Duties

1. Assist Park & Recreation Supervisor with basic operational tasks.
2. Perform tasks in short, medium, and long-term work plans.
3. Provide support of projects including, but not limited to, building and grounds maintenance, equipment maintenance, horticulture needs, and inventory organization.
4. Perform daily inspections of the Park to ensure all areas remain clean, safe, and maintained.
5. Perform daily inspections of the Children’s Nature Play area to ensure the ground is clear of any objects and debris. Periodically rake and add mulch to maintain a safe base level.
6. Sanitize and tidy up the reading cart, activity cart, and activities.
7. Maintain Park grounds by removing litter, emptying trash containers, sanitizing dog park, wiping down tables and chairs, and ensuring the Park is clean. Assist custodial staff with restocking and cleaning restrooms, as needed.

8. Assist with operations and troubleshooting of the videoboard, music streaming service, security cameras, security personnel, splash pad, lighting, etc.

9. Assist with programming and event set-up, including tents, barricades, stage, extension cords/cord covers, and arranging tables and chairs.

10. Operate power equipment such as leaf blower and power-washer to clean walkways.
11. Attend meetings related to park operations as directed.
12. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Skills/Abilities

  • High school diploma, or equivalent.
  • Certified Pool Operator, preferred.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a public setting.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to verbally communicate professionally with co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to take initiative and complete project assignments independently and on-time.
  • Ability to represent the Park with a high level of integrity and professionalism, adhere to park policies and support management decisions in a positive, professional manner.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage time well.
  • Ability to work without supervision in a small team environment.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Energetic and outgoing.
  • Experience operating small power equipment preferred.

Event Attendant

Function

The Park Attendant’s primary responsibility is to keep the park and facilities meticulously clean and to provide support for the activities of the Midland Downtown Park Conservancy (MDPC). Additionally, this position is expected to assist with the coordination and execution of all events and programs within the Centennial Park.

Reports to: Event & Program Manager

Position Duties

    ·

    • Represent Midland Downtown Park Conservancy and Centennial Park in a positive and professional manner.
    • Maintain relationships with existing and potential park visitors, clients, vendors, sponsors, and all other parties.
    • Assist event and programming producers and vendors.
    • Assist with the production and logistics of MDPC’s own small-scale events and programs.
    • Sanitize and tidy up the games, activity cart and reading cart.
    • Removal of litter, wiping down and tidying up tables and chairs, picking up trash and wiping down counters in park restrooms, removing pet waste in the dog park.
    • Visibly inspect the park grounds, including the children’s area and splash pad, to make sure the ground is clear of any objects and debris.
    • Be familiar with and able to discuss park grounds, activities, rules and opportunities to all visitors.
    • Assist with educating visitors of park rules and reinforcing park rules when necessary.
    • Periodically rake and add mulch to maintain a safe base level in the Children’s Nature Play.
    • Provide other assistance to the Executive Director, Event & Program Manager, and Operations Supervisor as requested.
    • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure efficient operation of the Park.
